22 February 2024Rant: I am so sick of pictograms / noun project icons in presentations
I'm a BIG fan of Patrick Winston's 'How to Speak' talk. It can be found on Youtube. He was a professor and mentor of mine from MIT. He is a fan of memes/pictograms that ARE relevant. Symbols and frameworks that are the entire slide. So then the audience has to pay attention and stitch together the relevant information (that is coming out of the speaker's mouth) in real time, into their own mind-meat and notes. The image becomes a mental anchor. But I've always been a fan of Frameworks. I'll never understand the "it needs to be more visual" slant. This is a Power Point, not a Pixar Movie. I use a lot of icons from The Noun Project for my personal stuff and opening up the file and removing the attribution and getting the artbox all fixed back up again has always been really annoying. Also I want to provide attribution but I'm not going to leave it in the graphic. So I streamlined the process for myself and thought I would share it here for anyone else who uses it.

I hope someone finds it useful, there was another project that I was hoping would help me but I couldn't get it working and don't know enough about NodeJS to fix it so I took the concept and wrote it in GoLang.
Hopefully this doesn't violate rule 3. I'm not making anything off this, I'm just trying to solve a tiny little first-world problem that I encounter from time-to-time. Though, if I can push the envelope a little bit, I'll take your stars. :)

IANAL, but pretty sure this violates the CC license for free use. I don't think you get to choose whether to leave the attribution in the graphic unless you opt for a paid tier (per this table on their site).

26 January 2026 - Before NP, I'd plow through Google images to scrape together a few sample icons just to comp out a fast design idea, then "FPO" the whole thing, and eventually have to re-research icon sets to purchase a set that hopefully resembled the ones I'd roughed into the draft. Designers on a deadline don't have that kind of time. Then Noun Project came along with a central repo of clean icons, ready-to-use, searchable by subject.
